    Individual Therapy

Individual therapy can help you make the important life changes you desire. I use a variety of therapeutic approaches to help people achieve their goals. Together we will decide which approach or combination of approaches will work best for you. Please read more about these therapeutic approaches below.

    Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT):

This approach helps clients become more aware of inaccurate or negative thinking styles. Clients learn to view challenging situations more clearly and respond to them in more effective ways. Between sessions, clients are encouraged to make self-observations and practice new skills. Numerous scientific studies have demonstrated the usefulness of CBT in treating depression, anxiety/panic, obsessive thinking, pain problems, sleep problems, and substance abuse. For more information, visit the Beck Institute.

    Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR):

EMDR helps people heal from recent and long-standing emotional trauma and anxiety. It incorporates elements from many different therapy approaches. Multiple studies have proven EMDR to be an effective treatment for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. You can read more about EMDR in the book, EMDR: The Breakthrough Eye Movement Therapy for Overcoming Anxiety, Stress and Trauma by Dr. Francine Shapiro or visit the EMDR International Association for more information.

    Mindfulness/Meditation:

This well-established therapeutic approach helps individuals learn to observe their perceptions, thoughts, and emotions in the present moment while maintaining an attitude of self-acceptance. As part of mindfulness work, clients are typically taught relaxation and meditation techniques. Mindfulness has been effectively applied to many psychological conditions including anxiety, depression, sleep problems, stress and pain control. It’s often also used as an adjunct treatment with the other therapeutic approaches. You can read more about mindfulness in the bookThe Mindful Way through Depression: Freeing Yourself from Chronic Unhappiness by Mark Williams, John Teasdale, Zindel Segal and Jon Kabat-Zinn; or visit How Mindfulness in Life Helps Your Health – WebMD
